A. Paul Mullis, Army
Description:
Augustus Paul Mullis enlisted in the Army on 14 Jun 1944 at age 24.
Trained at Camp Croft, SC and Ft. Meade, MD.  He was assigned to a
medical train unit making cross country runs, cared for patients in
ward cars, changed dressings and gave minor medications.  He kept the
train car sanitary.   He transported disabled patients to hospitals
near their homes.  He received an Honorable Discharge on 14 Dec 1945.
Paul worked in stone quarries (NC) and strip mines (KY) after he left
the army. He could operate steam shovels, road graders, and any other
earth-moving machine.  He "eye-ball" measurements and distances and was
almost always dead-on the money on any project he undertook.  In his
retirement he drove tour buses fo John Gibson, his wife's stepbrother
out of Dallas, NC.  Several times he took visitors to the 1982 World's
Fair in Knoxville, TN.  He also took up woodworking and could make an
item by just looking at a picture.  He made end tables, baby cribs,
shelves, magazine holders, mantles, step stools and many other items
for his children, grandchildren and friends.  Many people wanted and
received the wonderfully made baby cribs and his swings.  He loved the
feel and smell of wood and he made his projects with loving hands.
Paul spent the last five years of his life in the Lincolnton Nursing
Center, Lincolnton, NC.  He died 17 Feb 2004.
