Mary Lee, b. 9 Sep 1915, and Bessie George Kennedy, b. 18 Sep
1918 were born in Gaston County , Gastonia, NC. Their mother died of
tuberculosis when they were very young. Their father had to work and
therefore, neglected the two little girls. Some one cared enough to
see that they were taken to the Barium Springs Home for Children in
Barium Springs, NC. Mary Lee had become shy and withdrawn and Bessie
had developed tuberculosis and was unable to talk. The girls had a way
of communicating with each other. Bessie was in an iron lung for a
year. But the girls were treated kindly and grew into fine young
women. Bessie made up for not being able to talk. She was very
outgoing. Mary Lee remained a quiet, but strong minded woman.
