After being named Tyrone police chief five months ago, David Mullis has announced his resignation effective Friday, Sept. 21.

Mullis came to Tyrone from the Fulton County Marshall's Office in August, 1996.
He has served the Tyrone PD in many capacities including being a patrolman, detective and Captain.

Following the retirement of Chief Johnny Hay in November, 2006, Mullis was appointed as the interim chief until March, 2007 when the permanent job was awarded to him by the Town Council.

"I resigned for personal reasons," he said earlier this week. "It is time for a career change."
In his letter of resignation to Town Manager Barry Amos, Mullis expressed his thanks to Tyrone.

"I would like to express my sincere appreciation to you [Amos] as my supervisor as well as to my staff in the police department," he wrote. "I have enjoyed working with all of you and am grateful for the professional and personal development opportunities I was given over the years."

Wrote Mullis, "This will give me four full weeks to bring both you and my department up-to-speed on all operations and outstanding issues."
A big issue facing the department is the upcoming Founder's Day festival.
"We have to get through Founder's day," he noted. "My officers will be working 15 hour days. I can't tell you how much I appreciate what the town has done for me."
