KENANSVILLE - Mary Elizabeth Brogden Mullis, age 94, of
Kenansville, NC, fell asleep Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at Duplin
General Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born on November 10, 1913, in Beautancus, NC, the daughter of Herman and Julia Sloan Brogden. A graduate of Flora MacDonald College, she taught home economics and science for over 20 years in both Virginia and North Carolina. She married Troy Dewitt Mullis in 1940 and they moved to Moore County, NC, where Troy served in his first Presbyterian pastorates. Together they served side by side as ministers of the Lord Jesus Christ until his death in 1985. In addition to Moore County, they served churches in Bath County, Virginia, Philippi, West Virginia, and finally in Duplin County at Grove Presbyterian Church and Smith's Presbyterian Church. Her priorities were family, church, school, and civic involvement, particularly causes associated with education and children. She was a faithful volunteer for the Duplin General Hospital Auxiliary for over 40 years. She was a lifetime elder of Grove Presbyterian Church and served on various committees and civic boards. Mary's greatest source of joy was her relationship with people. She never met a stranger. She enjoyed sharing her home with family and friends of all ages. There was always room for one more at her table and she delighted in serving both food and her version of southern hospitality, wit and wisdom. She loved to travel, read, and surround herself with her beloved flowers. When difficult topics came up at the dinner table, she would often say "Let's talk about roses." She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Alvis Brogden, and many life long friends and extended family. Lovingly remembered by son Troy Dewitt Mullis, Jr. and wife Betty Mullis of Mooresville, NC son Dr. H. Thomas Mullis and wife, Diane of Radford Virginia and daughter Mary Elizabeth Mullis Capillary and husband Tony of Greenville, NC. Grandchildren are Lucy Page Mullis Kitner, John and Jason Mullis, Elizabeth Angela Capillary Martin and John Capillary, Ellen and Cammie Mundy. Her great-grandchildren are Hannah, Joshua, and Jack Mullis, Sloane Kitner, Lindsey Mundy, and Cane and Jayson Martin. She is also fondly remembered by Mr. Edgar Wells, special family friend and loving companion and advisor to the entire Mullis family. She will be missed by countless church family, neighbors, friends, and former students. Arrangements are being handled by Community Funeral Home of Warsaw NC. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, December 22, at 11 a.m. at Grove Presbyterian Church in Kenansville with the Reverend Barbara Hedin officiating. Visitation will be Friday evening at 7 at Community Funeral Home of Warsaw. Burial will follow later at Mint Hill, NC. The family will receive friends at other times at Mary's home in Kenansville on Bowden Drive. In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to Grove Presbyterian Church in Kenansville. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all those who visited Mother so faithfully while she was a resident in Kenansville Health and Rehab. Our comfort comes from our source of hope in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and the certain knowledge that we will all be together again in eternity.
