Richmond County Daily Journal (Rockingham, NC) - June 23, 2005 ROCK HILL - Helen Elizabeth Mullis Pinner, 84, died Friday, June 17, 2005 at Presbyterian Hospital Hospice Unit, Charlotte, N.C., after a short battle with cancer.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20 from Greene Funeral Home, Northwest Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Hogg and Dr. Larry Sizemore officiating. A private burial service was held.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Building by Faith or North American Missions, P.O. Box 11747, Rock Hill, S.C. 29731; or the National Downs Syndrome Society, 666 Broadway, New York, NY 10012, or Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, N.C. 28204.

Born in Concord, N.C., Mrs. Pinner was a daughter of the late William A. and Lula Louise Kepley Mullis, and was the widow of Brady Pinner. She was a graduate of Concord High School and Shuford Beauty School in Charlotte, N.C. Mrs. Pinner knew her husband as a child, and became his Army pen pal and married him in 1942. They resided in Concord for 20 years, and then moved to Cheraw where she was very active at the First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Pinner won numerous golf tournaments at Cheraw Country Club, played in bridge clubs and was a garden club member. She had a 20-year service pen form the Rock Hill Pink Ladies and a 25-year service pen from the Red Cross. Mrs. Pinner was a member of the Rocking Red Hats of Rock Hill, The Variety Club and two bridge clubs. At the First Baptist Church she was a member of the Joy Choir, Women's Missionary Council and Tea and Empathy.

Surviving are two daughters, Joette Tavernise and Diane (Odell) Vestal; three granddaughters, Kelly Edes, Paige Vestal and Hunter (Mischa) Fuerstman; four great-grandchildren, Brooke Edes, Brittani Malone, Sydney Fuerstman and Nathanial Fuerstman, all of Charlotte; a sister, Pauline (James) Kiker of Annapolis, Mary.; and a number of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Mullis and Raymond Mullis.
