Carpentry and farming, second only to Christian music, were the things Ollen Harvey Mullis enjoyed most. Carpentry and farming were a big part of his background. His father was a carpenter, and his grandfather was a farmer. Mr. Mullis learned music as a boy in what were then known as ``singing schools`` in his church. ``He learned music inside out, and backwards and forward,`` said Mr. Mullis`s son Don. Mr. Mullis, a Mint Hill native, died Monday, May 30, 1988. Carpentry was just one thing Mr. Mullis was known for. ``I remember him as a very simple Christian gentleman,`` said Terry Preslar, a friend of Mr. Mullis. ``As a young Christian he really influenced me. He trusted the Lord and his leadership and that led me to believe if you needed that (kind of guidance), it was there.`` Mr. Mullis did the same for his own children. ``He would wake us every morning with This is the day that the Lord hath made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it,` `` said Don Mullis. He said his father also taught them that if they couldn`t deal fairly with their fellow man, they shouldn`t deal with him at all. Mr. Mullis enjoyed music as a way of worship. His son said that in any church Mr. Mullis joined, he wound up being the choir director or song leader. ``He sang in a gospel quartet in his younger day,`` said Don Mullis. Mr. Mullis purchased a house in 1946 that was once an old trading post. He bought the trading post on N.C. 218 and completely remodeled it. ``It took him most of his life to do it. When we were kids, we could look through the cracks in the floor and see the ground and we could look through the cracks in the roof and see the stars,`` his son said. ``He loved wood and appreciated craftsmanship.`` Don Mullis said he remembered someone saying that when the Mullis family went on vacation, Mr. Mullis would look at the woodwork while the rest of the family took in the sights. Mr. Mullis joined the Navy in 1941 and was a part of the construction battalion stationed on Wallace island in the South Pacific. He was discharged in 1945 after becoming ill. Survivors are his wife, Marie; sons, Ollen Mullis Jr. of Grand Prairie, Tex., Robert Mullis, Don Mullis, both of Mint Hill; daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Tillotson; brothers, Joe Mullis of Mint Hill, Ted Mullis; sister, Mrs. Ruth Bartlett of Mint Hill; and five grandchildren. The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. today at Arlington Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
