Suspect surrenders gun, arrested at the scene By Jay Almond, News Editor

Tuesday, May 6, 2008 — Oakboro resident Paul Allen Chaney was shot and killed in what investigators believe was a clear case of first degree murder around 9:30 p.m. Monday at his home.

Investigators immediately responded to Chaney’s 11347 Shinn Road home where they found him laying dead on the ground near his porch with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Jeffrey Scott Mullis, 46, of 117 Thomas St., who was also at the scene, was arrested for Chaney’s murder.

Mullis called police and remained at the scene until officers arrived, at which point he surrendered to authorities a .357-Magnum pistol, believed to be the murder weapon.

Oakboro police, Stanly County Sheriff’s investigators and agents with the State Bureau of Investigation worked to process the crime scene after arresting Mullis.

The suspect and victim were apparently related and had been talking on the porch, when an argument ensued, according to Sheriff’s reports.

As the exchange escalated, Chaney went to step down off the porch. The suspect then allegedly pulled the pistol and shot Chaney once in the chest, killing him, police said.

Mullis was taken to Oakboro Police Department, then to the Stanly County Jail, where he was booked and jailed without bond.

He is scheduled to appear in court May 19 to face charges of first degree murder and assault by pointing a gun.
