Starting at 8:30 a.m., market customers can learn about carnivorous plants, organic gardening, growing day lilies, community garden programs and more from horticulture experts. There also will be a variety of bedding plants, herbs, shrubs, tree saplings and hostas and dish gardens on display. A seed planting program at 10 a.m. is designed to teach kids how they can develop green thumbs. It will be led by Jenifer Mullis of Laughing Owl Farm, and kids will take home their seedlings. Larry Mellichamp, botany professor and director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will demonstrate how to make a dish garden of carnivorous bog plants using Venus fly traps, sundews, pitcher plants and bog orchids. Master gardeners from the Mecklenburg County Agricultural Extension Service will share their gardening expertise and will have some plants for sale. Organic gardening expert and writer Don Boekelheide will also give a presentation. Matthews resident John Smethurst will talk about how to hybridize daylilies. The market opens at 7:15 a.m. on North Trade Street in downtown Matthews. Details: www.matthewsfarmersmarket.com or 704-821-6430.
